When most people think about The Southern Inn Restaurant on Lexington’s Main Street, their minds don’t go to take out family meals and taco dinners, but it should.
A few weekends ago, I Googled Southern Inn to see if any changes had been made to the menu. Like many people in our generation, I always look at the menu online before going to the restaurant. I did notice a strawberry salad on the menu that I have never had before, but the most exciting thing I found on the website was the prepared family dinners option.
The options for the take-home meals include classics like the blackened chicken pasta and the fried chicken, but what really caught my eye was the tacos option.
For Cinco de Mayo a few weeks ago, I decided to try the tacos, and they were a hit in my townhouse.
Everyone likes different things in my house. One of my housemates only likes chicken and rice on her tacos and despises tomatoes. Another is a vegetarian who only likes to eat things that fuel her body.
Everyone, however, loved the Southern Inn tacos. One of my roommates told everyone she saw that night about the tacos and how truly incredible they were.
Getting the tacos was also incredibly easy. I ordered them online and paid with PayPal. I then got an email confirmation, went to the restaurant, gave them my name, and picked up my order. After a year when nothing has gone as planned, it was nice to just pick up my order and for it to include everything that I needed.
The dinner itself included chicken, beef, rice, black beans, guacamole, jalapeno crema, pico de gallo, cheese, lettuce, and warm tortillas. Everything was delicious, but my favorite combination was a thin layer of the guacamole, then a layer of jalapeno crema, a spoonful of the pico, some black beans, the beef, and lettuce and cheese on top. I was full after two tacos, and they were both so delicious.
Even though five of us ate the meal made for four, we had plenty of left-overs, and some people had them the next day. Everyone felt content and full, the way that only food from Southern Inn can make you feel.
All of us felt like the meal was one of the best we had eaten in a very long time, and it made it so much easier to get through the week. The promise of knowing there is something beyond d-hall and Evans dining made every-thing a little more bearable.
If you are reading this article, this is your sign to try something from the Southern Inn prepared family meals menu. The meals range from $28 for two people to $78 for four, depending on what you decide to get. The classics like Blackened chicken penne pasta and the fried chicken are a little more ex-pensive, and I cannot attest if they are as delicious as they are in the restaurant, but the tacos were truly incredible.
Right now, the Southern Inn is not offering their tacos, but the chicken enchilada is available and it’s composed of the same elements as the tacos. Take the time to savor the most wonderful dining options Lexington has to offer.
