The Generals volleyball team blanked Lynchburg College Wednesday, winning 3-0, with five players registering at least five kills during the match. Washington and Lee is now 6-0 in the ODAC, and 14-5 overall, remaining undefeated at home.

Brynne Gould, ’21, led the team with eight kills and three in service aces.

Gould said one of the reasons for the team’s success Wednesday was motivation from students in the stands.

“We always love playing at home because of the hype fans,” Gould said.

Additionally, hard work in practice and focusing on teamwork has helped the team in its success this season.

“Our competitive nature, especially in practice, has helped the team be successful in ODAC [play] this year,” Gould said. “Trust in each other and trust in our systems is a large part of what we try to carry over into game situations.”

Courtney Berry, ’21, led the Generals in blocks, recording four. Berry also recorded five kills.

Berry said focusing on the team instead of each individual player has helped the Generals in their successes this season.

“Our team has great chemistry on and off the court, which helps us to trust and build each other up in game situations,” Berry said. “Our success doesn’t come from any one individual, but rather from the dynamic we have as 19 different people working together as one.”

“The unity of this team is what’s propelling us to our victories,” she continued, further attributing their success to “depth and dedication.”

Other players to record at least five digs in Wednesday’s game include Meg Guignon, ’19, with five and Allison Webb, ’20, and Ashleigh Meade, ’20, with six each.

Meade said this year’s team is very committed to both the game and each other, helping them foster chemistry both on and off the court.

“We are all committed not only to the sport and the team but to each other,” Meade said. “A lot of our success stems from our chemistry on and off the court…It’s our love for each other that has pushed us to be the best we can be.”

On Friday, the Generals fell to 23rd-ranked Johns Hopkins University 3-0. Guignon led the team in kills and digs, tallying six and fifteen respectively.

Mollie Ray, ’20, had ten digs and nine assists, while Elena West, ’18, tallied ten assists and five digs. Gould led the team in blocks with two and Berry led the Generals in service aces, registering three.

On Saturday, Washington and Lee took on Stevenson University and 12th-ranked Juniata College. The Generals lost to Stevenson 3-1 and to Juniata 3-0.

As for the rest of the season, the team hopes to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference title. The team has not won the ODAC tournament since 2014.

The Generals are currently tied for first in the ODAC with Randolph-Macon College, who won the ODAC tournament in 2016 and 2015. The Generals will play the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon on Wednesday.
