The Generals football team achieved its first win of the season against the Sewanee Tigers with a final score of 42 to 7, thanks to a stream of back-to-back touchdowns in the second half.

Washington and Lee junior defensive lineman Andrew Frailer (#54) said the team came back from halftime with confidence in each other instead of a gloomy outlook.

“What we we talked about as a team after the game was the idea of resilience,” Frailer said. “We were very confident coming out of half time that we were going to fix things.”

The home game at Wilson Field on Saturday, Sept. 14 was Washington and Lee’s first win of the year, after last week’s 14-26 loss to Dickinson College.

“We had a lot of guys contribute to this win and it definitely showed in our box score,” said Generals junior running back Josh Breece (#1). “It came later than expected but we definitely knew what we were capable of and it showed on the scoreboard.”

Washington and Lee senior quarterback Drew Richardson (#15) said he was proud of the team’s comeback from last week.

“It was similar [to last week’s game] in the fact that we came out a little bit flat to start with and got things rocking in the second half,” Richardson said. “We were really able to dominate on both sides of the ball in the second half.”

Sewanee pulled the first touchdown of the game during the first quarter. Breece fumbled near the five yard line during the second quarter and a referee called it a touchback. But he came back within the first four minutes of the third quarter with the team’s first touchdown.

“We had a lot of opposition to the call, but we’re in charge of what we can control and it didn’t really affect the outcome of the game,” Breece said.

Richardson scored the team’s second touchdown of the quarter. Richardson also scored a third touchdown for the Generals in the last minute of the third quarter.

“The offensive line had a phenomenal game,” Richardson said. “They were able to get a great push off of the line of scrimmage and make space for ball carriers to get some plays.”

Washington and Lee pulled three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter of the game, thanks to runs from sophomore running back Alex Wertz (#20), sophomore quarterback Jack Pollard (#9) and first-year running back Harry Crutcher (#8).

Frailer tallied four total tackles (one solo, three assist) in addition to 1.5 total sacks, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. He said he thought the whole defensive line showed up well holding the Tigers to negative seven total rushing yards.

“We have at least 10 or 12 people who can rotate through for serious playing time and really make a difference,” Frailer said. “We had a ton of pressure on the quarterback definitely a few sacks at least.”

The Generals will remain at Wilson Field to open ODAC play against Guilford College next Saturday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm.

“Guilford gave us a good game last year and we weren’t able to do as well as we wanted to,” Richardson said. “We’re definitely hoping to have a better showing against them this year.”

Frailer said that while the Generals team takes it one week at a time, he’s confident they’ll make their mark with conference season starting next week.

“We’re looking forward to asserting ourselves as a major player in the conference again and as someone that’s tough to deal with,” he said.
