On March 21, the Washington and Lee baseball team had their most dominant win of the past two seasons in a 20-1 win against Hampden Sydney. During the game, they scored the most runs and allowed the fewest runs since 2022. The performance marked a significant improvement from last season.
Eighteen games into the season, the team sits comfortably over .500 and boasts an 11-6-1 record, a vast improvement from their 13-17 record in 2025.
The Generals boast ranked wins against No. 25 Randolph-Macon College, No. 11 Shenandoah University and No. 13/14 Bridgewater College. They also tied No. 4 Lynchburg. Oakley Rempel, ’28, said he believes they can beat any team in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).
“We are a great team this year, and we think that we can win most of our games going forward,” Rempel said. “We can beat anyone if we are effective on the mound.”
But Gannon Anthony, ’28, said the team has plenty of room to improve on their solid start to the season.
“We dropped some very winnable games at the start of the season,” he said, “but we’re in a good spot and the team culture is great.”
Morale is high and players on the team believe they have improved considerably, Anthony said.
“Our offensive is gritty and in general the game time energy is much better than previous years,” he said. We can compete with anybody in the country.”
“The energy is very high,” Rempel said, “and the confidence is a lot higher than last year.”
He also said that the team’s nine first-years are playing well.
Additionally, Rempel and Anthony said that their team’s goals are to finish near the top of the ODAC conference and host a playoff game.
Rempel said that while the generals have already played some of their hardest competition, they still have difficult conference games ahead.
“Since we already played Lynchburg and Randolph-Macon, the toughest competition is Bridgewater and Roanoke,” he said.
Next up, the Generals play at Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday. The following Saturday, they will host Guilford for a doubleheader at noon and 3:00 p.m.
