Candidates engaged in heated discussions on topics including strategies to defeat ISIS, and how to best control illegal immigration. Viewers felt that Florida Senator Marco Rubio was the big winner of the night, according to exit polls conducted by Google following the prime time debate. Missing from the stage was GOP frontrunner and New York City real estate mogul Donald Trump, who refused to attend after Fox News rejected his demand that anchor Megyn Kelly be barred from moderating the debate. He instead held an event to raise money for wounded veterans.
