General of the Week: Ashleigh Meade, ’20

Ashleigh Meade, ‘20, is an outside hitter for W&L women’s volleyball team and has been heating up the court in recent matches. During the Generals’ match against Meredith College on Sept. 9, Meade hit .909 with 10 kills, which helped to propel the team to a 3-0 victory. The Phi sat down with Meade, from Bristow, Va., to talk about her performance last weekend and about the future for the team.

Adele Petagna

The Phi: Congratulations! I heard you’ve now become a starter this weekend after your great performance in the home games over the weekend. Tell me about the tournament and the things you accomplished.

Ashleigh: Thanks! This was our second tournament of the season. We played Meredith, SVU, Eastern and Maryville. I was put in during one of the games on Friday and just started playing very well; I actually had my best hitting game ever against Meredith. After my performance as a right side hitter, my coach decided to put me as a regular starter.

Phi: What are some of the team’s goals for the rest of the season?

Ashleigh: Our main goals as a team are to win ODACs of course and then hopefully go on to the NCAA tournament.

Phi: Great! What about personal improvements as a player?

Ashleigh:  I want to start consistently watching film before practice and games to improve.

Phi: Can you talk a little bit about what the team does on a weekly basis to prep for tournaments and games?

Ashleigh: When we are not having games, we practice almost every day. Most days we have regular team practice besides one day a week where we have positional practice. Also, if you have time you can schedule an individual practice with the coach.

Phi: Besides volleyball, what are you most looking forward to this semester at W&L?

Ashleigh: Definitely learning to manage school work with volleyball. I am also really excited for my circuits class where we make circuit boards in lab for my engineering major.
